Pilgrimages along Kapellenweg trail

On this 17.5-kilometer pilgrimage trail in the Großarltal Valley, you can hike from chapel to chapel. Every chapel is dedicated to a positive wish based on one of the Ten Commandments, with the idea of guiding hikers on their pilgrimage as well as in their daily lives. This “Trail of Good Wishes” inspires you to reflect and offers a recreative experience for your heart and soul.

Kapellenweg – route description

The pilgrim’s trail starts right beside a religious building: the parish church of Großarl. From there, follow the chapel symbols towards Hüttschlag until you get to the church of the same name. On the way to your first destination, you will pass by six impressive chapels, starting with Laireiting chapel, followed by Bichl, Figler, Griesbichl, Neuhof, and, finally, Schappach chapel. From Hüttschlag, the trail winds towards your next destination at the valley end. Follow the Kapellenweg trail signs and continue along the way, passing by Wolfau chapel as well as Karteis, Maurach, and Hubertus chapel. The pilgrim’s trail ends at Pertill chapel at the valley end in Hüttschlag.

Trail conditions and spots for a break

Kapellenweg trail takes you across meadows and through forests but also has some sections that run parallel to the road or directly along it. Instead of the usual yellow hiking trail signs, the pilgrim’s trail is marked with chapel symbols pointing the way. As a large part of the route runs along the valley’s cycle routes and hiking trails, Kapellenweg trail is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. If you’re looking for a nice spot for a break in the crisp mountain air, we recommend Wengeralm located at approximately 1,650 meters above sea level.

Alternative route for pilgrims with less time

If you only have time for a short hike to the chapels of Gastein, you can also start at the middle station of Gipfelbahn Fulseck cable car. From there, follow the forest trail to Wengeralm and the chapel of the same name. From there, it’s straight on to Hubertus chapel.
